Nigeria: FG Orders Customs to Impound Hardwood Shipments

Federal Government has ordered the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) to immediately confiscate containers of hardwood being shipped out of the country.

Hardwood is the raw material used in the manufacture of various household furnishing.President, Furniture & Allied Products Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (FAPMAN), Mr. Segun Adetiba disclosed at the AGM of the association among order things, while giving stewardship of his achievement in office, noted that export of the raw material would make it impossible for the furniture industries in Nigeria to thrive.

Adetiba who said that it was as a result of the efforts of the association that warranted the government to look into stemming the export of Hardwood, as the body had noted the practice was affecting the existence of local furniture manufacturing industries in the country.

He said that the export of the material has increased the data of unemployment in the country, as youths are no longer meaningfully employed, "hardwood is being exported to the detriment of our youths",he stated.

He however lamented the rate at which exporters are busy exporting what should have propelled the growth of the furnishing industry in the country.

Further, the president said that FAPMAN is presently partnering with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) in order to export finished products to other countries to help improve fortune of the economy, as well that NEPC is ready to help transport their goods to exhibition centres outside the country during exhibitions.

On the other hand, the president further lamented the inability of banks to help the growth of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as he said that banks only prefer to deal with multinationals.
