Mauritius: FNASAYT

opinion

Port Louis — I think I'm also going to create a "federation". Let's see, I'm going to call it the Federation of the Not As Stupid As You Think (FNASAYT). Not bad, huh? I'm feeling very creative today so I think I'll design the logo of the FNASAYT while I'm at it.

I'll ask someone to draw me a group of ten people sitting under a tree and having a picnic. Or something to that effect.

So I will ask of my members that they stay at home on 1st May. I will ask them to invite friends and family at theirs, prepare the nicest dishes (but no rice if they can help it), buy loads of cold beer and diet coke or whatever else they fancy and have a feast! Or they could choose to go to the beach. That's also allowed - what matters on that day is that they have fun with near and dear ones.

Why in Heaven's name should people forgo a hard earned holiday to get on a bus, sit amidst a lot of noise and go and stand in the heat, get sun burnt and listen to people standing on a stage, mike in hand babbling on and on?

Do you honestly think people care to hear Paul Bérenger's supposed indignation regarding the fact that Ramgoolam sat in a - God forbid - Porsche worth over Rs 14 million? What kind of an argument is that anyway? I suppose the same kind as Deva Virahsawmy's: "Bérenger should tell us once and for all if he is going to run as candidate for PM, he needs to say it on 1st May". Who cares? While we are at it, somebody needs to tell Pravind Jugnauth that nobody gives two dime about whether he thinks he is. "Man of conviction and I keep my word", as he said the other day. So isn't my plan better? Get some friends together and have an afternoon of laugh and cheer? Oh I suppose you could go and listen to Jocelyn Grégoire. Although I don't see why you should. He's not interested in you if you're not a Creole.

Why on earth would one want to go and listen to a priest who preaches division? I'm surprised people haven't reacted more forcefully when they heard Grégoire's message - the Creoles come to me, everybody else go and listen to mainstream politicians. If that's not racist, I don't know what it is. Jocelyn Grégoire makes our foolish politicians suddenly seem more endearing. Doesn't my plan sound like a better idea?

So to be a member of the FNASAYT all that is required is that you stop believing every stupid thing that a politician tells you, that you see them for what they really are - power hungry little people - and that you reject people who seem to think only in terms of race and religion. Oh and one more thing - to be a member of the FNASAYT, you have to be a Mauritian. A true one.
