Joseph Marius Omog has been named new coach for Team A of the Indomitable Lions. He is to be assisted by Robert Atah.
This is a decision by Sports and Physical Education Minister, Augustine Edjoa, to decentralise the duty of coaching within the national football team. This decision was taken after the Technical Director of the national football team tabled its proposition at a meeting that brought together officials of the Ministry and FECAFOOT in Yaounde recently.
It will relieve Head Coach, Otto Pfister, of the arduous task of coaching teams A and B of the national football team, following his earlier declaration of his exclusive interest in 'big' players.
Maintained in his post is Francois Toindouba as goalkeeper coach. Meanwhile, Otto Pfister remains as the Head Coach for the national football team.According to officials of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, the decision complements AFC's latter decision creating an African Cup of Nations, AFCON, for local players and spells out the necessity for the adequate discharge of functions, notably to improve on the technical aspects of football and abet performance in the upcoming CEMAC Cup (date yet to be announced).
58-year old Joseph Marius Omog was assistant to Winfred Schafer, former Head Coach of the Indomitable Lions from 2001 - 2003. He was later dismissed at the same time with the goalkeeper coach, Thomas Nkono, on March 10, 2003, by the former Minister of Youth and Sports, Bidoung Mpkatt, following Cameroon's defeat in a friendly encounter with Ivory Coast 0-3 on February 11, the same year.
He joined Fovu of Baham Football Club and was dismissed on October 9, 2007, for "insufficient results".Robert Atah, Omog's Assistant, worked with Jean Paul Akono, as assistant trainer of the Junior National Team. They both failed to qualify the Junior Lions for the August 2007 Dusseldorf, Germany Games and was relieved from his function.
Observers see Friday's decision as having great impact on the septuagenarian Otto Pfister whose responsibility has slightly been wavered. However, his salary remains unchanged while those of the appointed remain as formerly, but they will have other benefits like match bonuses.
