ADDIS ABABA will provide a hot and windy challenge to Ugandan athletes who arrive here today for the Africa Athletics Championships.

Temperatures close to 30 degrees centigrade will welcome Uganda's team of seven.

Most countries, including neighbours Kenya, have already arrived for the Samsung-sponsored championship.

Several stars have however decided to skip the meet.

"The timing was poor. Most athletes are just coming from the World Cross Country and World Indoor Championships so they could not adjust," a Kenyan official said.

"Perhaps it would have been organised close to the Olympic deadline to give more athletes a chance to qualify for the games," he added.

Ethiopia is however still determined to make the games a success, with the dress rehearsals for the opening ceremony going on in full swing at the national stadium.

The country has also boosted its security, deploying armed soldiers in the city centre.

The stadium has been sealed off save for the athletes and media, who are attending a two-day workshop and the athletes.
