Uganda: Karamoja Needs Urgent Food Aid, Says Expert

THE Karamoja region deserves special food aid to ward off imminent starvation, the World Food Programme (WFP) has said.
The agency's Karamoja sub-office head, Rose Eyoru, reported that over 300,000 people were faced with starvation in the region.
"Between now and July, Kotido needs about 4,000 metric tonnes of food worth $2.7m," she told donors last week.
She said Karamoja had a history of problems ranging from long dry spells, droughts, a fast growing population, severe environmental degradation and poor infrastructure that has made the region vulnerable.
Eyoru said the global food agency was facing financial problems that might force them to scale down the school and the lactating mothers' feeding schemes, which had been successful in the region.
The donors' team led was lead by the WFP deputy country representative, Alix Lonston.
