Kampala — WE have seen them outdo themselves just to prove to the world that they can sing. And indeed some can actually sing, although many still need prayers - thanks to the Celtel-sponsored Idols East and Southern Africa for showcasing their might.
DStv audiences across Africa have had their share of it all since the beginning of the month - the talented, the promising, the lost, the jokers, name it.
Now after the Idols auditions did their rounds in Uganda, Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the judges have named their top 65 contestants.
From Uganda, nine hopefuls will soon tussle it out with the other 56, as each tries their luck on taking home the winner's prize - $80,000 (about sh136m), and a recording contract from Sony BMG.
The lucky Ugandans heading to Nairobi for the next round are Faycal Birikunzila, Brendah Asiimwe, Caroline Nabulime, Cynthia Kuto and Edris Segawa. Others are Stella Amito, Tonny Okello, Allan Kayanja and Dinah Buyinza .
After impressing preliminary judges; Kenyan radio personality Angela Angwenyi, rap-sensation Scar and music producer TK Siyandi, will the top 65 make it past the Idols theatre auditions?
Showing this Sunday on M-Net at 6:00 pm and Monday at 7:00pm, the theatre auditions also do their sieving. Who will succeed? Who will succumb to the pressure? And who will stand out as a true star?
If you miss the live theatre auditions, you can tune in to DStv Channel 198, which now runs the series on a 24-hour basis until May 25.
M-Net will also be screening special Idols episodes every Sunday and Monday at 6:00pm and 7:00pm until the series ends on July 27.
Idols is also available on UBC TV every Friday at 8:00pm.
For interactive enjoyment of the series, log on to www.mnetafrica.com and post your comments, chat with other fans and read about your favourite Idols as you await to see the new African star probably come from Uganda.
