Nairobi — A GRAND expedition across Africa by road to raise awareness in the fight against malaria has reached Mombasa.
A team of philanthropists in the expedition, "One Net One Life", has been donating mosquito nets to thousands of pregnant mothers and children under the age of five.
Mr Kingsley Holgate, the lead philanthropist, told Mombasa Mayor, Mr Abubakar Mohdhar, that the Africa expedition had been a success.
"We have distributed thousands of mosquito nets and helped create awareness on malaria to about five million people," he said.
The expedition is also carrying a book, the Scroll of Peace and Goodwill, endorsed by, among others, Mr Nelson Mandela, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The Mayor appended his signature to the book after receiving the philanthropists at his parlour.
British Airways has supported the campaign by financing the buying of specially treated mosquito nets.
Mr Suneel Tyagi, the British Airways Area Manager for East and Central Africa and Mr Rob Cooper, BA service delivery manager, said the airline had invested close to Sh13 million in the project.
Timbwani Ward councillor, Mrs Lillian Adero, who hosted the group in Likoni thanked them for donating mosquito nests to several children's homes.
From Mombasa, the group will travel to the South Coast and then cross to Tanga, Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara and into Mozambique.
