Ugandan athletes head into the Africa Senior Athletics Championships that begin tomorrow here, with qualification for the Olympic Games as the major target.

"It's not about winning medals but qualifying. I would be fine missing out on a medal but I hit the qualifying mark. My number one goal is being in Beijing, China for the Olympics," steeplechase star Simon Ayeko told Daily Monitor.

Ayeko's remarks were echoed by Justine Bayiga, Uganda's best female sprinter, who habours hopes of competing at the Olympics for the first time. "I know the conditions especially the altitude in Ethiopia will be very tough but hopefully I can qualify.

A medal will just be a bonus," Bayiga, who represented Uganda at last year's World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan, said.

Bayiga can make the Olympic team on a wild card basis as the only female but that will be if only Dorcus Inzikuru doesn't hit the qualifying mark.

"I know there is a wild card but that's not what I am looking for. I want to qualify on merit," Bayiga asserted. Javelin star Annet Kabasindi is also determined to make it to Beijing. Uganda has a 7-man team.
