Given the segregated nature of the Nigerian Army Barracks across the country, investigations revealed that the barracks are heaven to never-do-well in the society, hoodlums, pick pockets, thieves and suspected army robbers. The place cannot be cordon by the Police. Security operatives are not allowed inside the barracks and arrest is not made in the confine of the barracks. The army barracks have become a place for prostitutes as prostitution business strives there.
Reacting to the situation, the chaplain of the Catholic Church attached to the Amphibious Brigade Calabar, Lance Corporal Imoke told newsmen on Sunday after mass that army barracks have become a haven for robbers and prostitutes following the unchecked accommodation of civilians in the barracks.
Officers who harbor girl friends and other people in the barracks have turned it into a den for thieves as those so favoured use the place as operational base to perpetrate crime. Corporal Imoke said since policemen do not visit barracks to arrest criminals, most people with criminal intensions sought for accommodation in the army barracks, which they consider safe.
The chaplain who spoke on the upsurge in crime around the federal housing estate Calabar said on the several occasions, thieves apprehended are allowed to go free because they have officers who stand for them. In Eburutu where I live, the fear of attack is the order of the day.
