Sports Administrators say the "Know Your Sports Council" workshop, which was hosted by the second Botswana National Sports Council in Gaborone last Saturday, is the way forward.
Conducted by BNSC Executive Secretary, Kitso Kemoeng, and Sports Development Manager, Seitshiro Matlala, the workshop was aimed at educating BNSC affiliates and members of the public on how the sports council operates.
One of those who expressed delight at the workshop is Botswana Volleyball Federation president, Tsoseletso Nkala, who told Voice Sport: "This is the only forum where the BNSC explains how they work and what they do. It's a good initiative for the BNSC to explain things to their affiliates. You really get to know how things work and my hope is for such workshops to be held more frequently and in different places. Three times would be ideal."
Nkala added, "I am now empowered to go and give volleyball affiliates with the knowledge they need on the functions of the BNSC and how to approach them for projects. This will help improve on our delivery. It's a pity I missed the first workshop last year."
The Botswana Netball Association Public Relations Officer, Debra Dintletse, is also pleased with the exercise and hopes the BNSC will hold it more frequently.
She told Voice Sport, "The BNSC must hold such workshops more often. Three times a year in three different places would be a good start. We could have a workshop in the south, the north and the central district. This way, the BNSC and its affiliates would understand each other better, which is a good thing for our sport. Netball has surely gained from this workshop and I like to think other codes have learnt some things which will help them deal with the BNSC better."
For his part, Kemoeng commented that, "I believe the workshops are serving their purpose. Since the first such one last year, things have improved a lot. BNSC affiliates now do most things properly, which has helped improve our working relationship with them and, in turn, had projects being run better."

Asked for comment on the attendance of the event, Kemoeng pointed out that more people would have been ideal.
"I would have loved to have more people from the general public but I am pleased with the turn up from the media and our affiliates. They are the main link between the public and us. If the media begins to understand the functions of the BNSC, they will be in a better position to report on sport and this will in turn get the public to appreciate what we do more".
The BNSC chief, however, expressed hope that things would be better in the future. "We have another workshop planned for the north later in the year and I believe they will be more attendants from the general public since we have less affiliate offices in the region. I am confident future workshops will attract the general public. They need to know what we do and how we do it. Such workshops are the place they can get the information they need about us.
