The appalling situation in the Southeastern county of Grand Kru has claimed the attention of citizens from that country residing in Monrovia including Rep. Gbenimah Slopadoe, Member of Parliament from the county.
The Monrovia-based Grand Kru citizens including one of their lawmakers, Rep. Slopadoe have launched an appeal to the international community for assistance intended to once again restore basic social services in the county.
The citizens are mainly appealing to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations High Commission on Refugee (UNHCH), the Good Samarians and other humanitarian organizations to assist the county to resurrect from its present state of shambles.
In a mass citizen meeting held in Clara Town over the weekend, the citizens lamented that the appalling condition of the county has reached an alarming rate. They noted that the unavailability of basic social services in Grand Kru County has become so grave that the citizens mostly women and children have contacted various diseases.
In a statement to his kinsmen, Grand Kru County Representative Gbenimah Slopadoe said the lack of basic social services in the county is meanly due to the deplorable road condition. He said presently Grand Kru is being cut from the rest of the country. Rep. Slopadoe pointed out that donors are reluctant to reach in Grand Kru County apparently due to the lack of road network. He said due to the bad road condition in the county operations of schools and other activities have come to a halt.
He said presently there is no clinic in the county while citizens in the county are drinking dirty water due to the lack of hand pumps.
The Development Superintendent of Grand Kru County, Mr. Monmuer Baryon disclosed that people in the Sass Town area who are not around the creek or rivers are drinking dirty water as a result of the unavailability of hand pumps.
He then called on his kinsmen to join efforts in tackling the deplorable situation that has befallen their county. "We must work together and join Rep. Slopadoe to tackle this appalling situation that is killing our people," Mr. Baryon lamented.
Meanwhile, Rep. Slopadoe has lauded the German Agro Action for rehabilitating several roads in the county. He said as a result of the rehabilitation work on some of the roads in Grand Kru County by the German Agro Action the citizens are now able to carry out their business activities.
