Botswana: Hotter Than Pepper!

29 April 2008

Rudeboy has grounds to believe that P-Side Classics Vol.1 is certainly one of the most forward-looking records to come out this year-or the year of its original release, 2000.

Hip-Hop has a rich history in Partial-the leafy suburb of Gaborone. This small neighborhood is where MCs such as Carl, Vocab, Linx, Buckshot, Prez Beats, Heavy, Pops, Goof, Mr. T, Ice Queen, Big Duke, HLZ, S.I.X, Man-E, and Mr. Doe began developing their now acclaimed styles.

And the place where they spent a lot of time working out new ideas was right under DJ Sid's roof.

The brother is still the same trigger for creativity in two ways. He exposes many artists to new music, and back in the days he gave airplay to these artists' music, exposing these amazing new artists to the entire nation through RB2.

The P-side Classics Vol.1 compilation displays an eclectic mix of some of the different styles of Hip-Hop that Botswana has to offer.

The disc starts out with an intro by Mr. T, followed by the album's super-slamming original tune entitled Timba, which features the P-Side All Stars.

A theme of a Hip-Hop history lesson weaves itself in and out of the album starting with "Can't Touch" by Nomadic and Mr. Doe, which has new beats that echoes ideas of the early days. "So much to tell" which features Yarona FM's Boipelo Seleke reminds me of the golden days of Warren G and Nate Dogg.

However my favourite track in this disc belongs to the daring female MC, Desma Basson aka Ice Queen and it is simply entitled P-Side; a superb piece that one may want to listen to on repeat while driving around on a foggy night.

The themes in this record are broken down with a few humorous plugs by the king of local comedy, Dignash. However, familiar Hip-Hop themes of booty-busting beats and call-and-response vocals are given tremendous breath and projection as the instrumental builds each track to grand proportion while never detracting from the all-essential groove. Remixed and remastered, P-Side Classics Vol.1 still sounds vital, provocative and groove-righteous.

This is a smoking Hip-Hop album and is also an old-school fantastic. According to DJ Sid the release of this album was to pave way for yet another slamming Vol.2 disc with fresh new songs, which is set for release in June. Don't miss the launch on 13th February.
