Uganda: SDCA Tears Into Fufa Over Corporate Sponsorship

The Super Division Clubs Association (SDCA) has made it clear that their clubs will not seek permission or clearance from local soccer governing body Fufa before securing corporate sponsorship.

During the press briefing at Lugogo yesterday, SDCA official Kavuma Kabenge disclosed that they respect Fufa but warned they would not allow Fufa to intervene in certain issues.

"We all agree that Fufa governs soccer in Uganda. What we do not want is for them to intervene in club activities while they are securing sponsorships," said Kabenge.

SDCA's announcement came a day after uganda telecom sunk Shs100m in sponsorship to record league champions SC Villa. After SC Villa signed the deal with utl, Fufa accused the 16-time national champions for not informing them about the development.

"Kindly be reminded of our earlier communication regarding the sponsorship issue. Fufa Competitions Committee required all 2007/2008 Super League clubs to submit any copies of contracts signed with any sponsors before the GTV contract and that future contracts with the new club sponsors will be cleared by Fufa before being endorsed by clubs," read part of the letter FCC secretary Moses Magogo sent to Villa. SC Villa head of leagal and compliance Fred Muwema denied that the contract with utl contravenes any existing rules.

"Fufa is neither an owner or shareholder in the clubs and it doesn't contribute to the finances that run the clubs. So financially and economically, the clubs are independent of Fufa and if any regulation is made in this regard it must be expressly agreed to by the club," he said.
