The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission says verification and collation of the presidential election results will commence tomorrow and is inviting candidates or their agents to witness the process.

In a statement, ZEC chief elections officer Mr Lovemore Sekeramayi said the exercise would be conducted at the Harare International Conference Centre. "The exercise will commence on 1st of May 2008 at the Harare International Conference Centre Committee Room 4 at 1400 hours.

"All candidates who participated in the 2008 presidential election or their chief election agents are urged to attend as this exercise will pave way for the announcement of the results of the presidential election," he said. ZEC chairperson Justice George Chiweshe told journalists at the weekend that the chief elections officer and the candidates had agreed that each party would collate its own figures. The statistics would then be compared at the end of the exercise.

Similar figures would indicate that the final position was correct, but any discrepancies would be cross-checked. Justice Chiweshe said several factors had hampered the announcement of the result and cited transport and communication challenges coupled with a recount of the votes in 23 constituencies.
