Road accidents are costing the country millions of shillings in lost manpower, with those killed or injured mostly aged between 15 and 44 years, a prime career and family stage in life.

Friends of the National Spinal Injury Hospital vice chairman, Dr Chandu Sheth, appealed to the government to intervene.

Dr Sheth made the remarks during the handing over by the Zarina and Naushad Merali Foundation of a $100,000 (Sh6.2 million) cheque donation to the hospital to be used in building a physiotherapy wing, and increase the hospital's bed capacity to 40.

Waiting period for a bed at the hospital is between three and six months. Survivors, most with spinal injuries end up at hospital for rehabilitation. Most victims were in road accidents.
