A boy who died after a fight at Koelel High School in Gilgil had been cheered for beating a Form Four student moments before he collapsed in his dormitory, the High Court in Nakuru was told Tuesday.

Testifying in a case in which the 16-year-old student has been charged with the murder of a colleague, a student at the school told the court that the Bernard Makau was congratulated by his dorm-mates for beating a Form Four student.

Ken Joe Mathenge told Lady Justice Murigi Mugo that Makau walked into the dormitory at about 5.30 less than an hour after the fateful fight on February 3 and was received cheers from his roommates.

He said it was rare for a Form Two to beat a Form Four and that is why the deceased had been congratulated.

The celebration in Wei Wei House where the deceased resided was however short-lived as Makau who looked weak supported himself on his bed drawing the concern of the fellow students.

One of them, Ndegwa, rushed to where Makau was standing and asked him if he was fine and he answered in the affirmative.

Master Mathenge told the court the Makau lost consciousness and fainted while trying to support himself with assistance from Ndegwa.

"He made as if to hold onto Ndegwa but he was not able, he dropped to the ground, his eyes were half open and we thought that he had fainted," said Mathenge.

He said the students in the room called scouts who administered first aid to the unconscious boy.

The Form Four student told the court that Makau temporarily regained consciousness but they realised he had urinated on himself.

He said they asked him if he could stand but Makau who could not speak, shook his head, to mean no.

Makau started breathing heavily and then gasped for air before slipping into unconsciousness.

Makau later died.

Mathenge was testifying in a case where Albert Kiromo Sackey is charged with killing Bernard Maku on February 3 at Koelel High School in Gilgil.

He said the deceased and Sackey had earlier fought for about five to ten minutes before they were separated.
