WORLD Vision and the National Forestry Authority (NFA) will plant trees in 27 districts countrywide. The programme is aimed at mitigating the effects of climatic change caused by deforestation.

"Twenty percent of the effects of climatic change are caused by deforestation," said Damian Akankwasa, the authority's executive director, at the signing ceremony in Kampala on Monday.

According to a statement from World Vision, the organisation will encourage children they sponsor to plant trees.

"We would like each child to plant 100 trees," said Geoffrey Isingoma of World Vision.

The organisation's national director, Rudo Kwaramba, said they sponsor over 100,000 children in the 27 districts.

The authority, through its National Tree Seed Centre, will provide quality seedlings, train the communities on the importance of tree planting and advise on suitable tree species for each area.

World Vision will buy the seedlings, mobilise the communities for distribution and coordinate the training. Akankwasa said the trees would enhance the communities' income.
