Luanda — About 7,000 firearms and over 30,000 ammunitions have already been handed over to the National Police, in the light of the programme of disarming citizens in illegal possession of firearms.
The information was announced on Tuesday by the pokesperson of the Disarmament Commission, commissioner Paulo de Almeida, at the end of a meeting that was presided over by the prime minister, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
According to Paulo de Almeida, there is a great participation of citizens and everything indicates that the results will be positive at the end of the campaign.
The period for voluntary handing over of firearms is set for the period of May to June, followed by the phase of forcible collection of weapons illegally possessed by civilians.
The ministers of Home Affairs, Roberto Leal Monteiro "Ngongo", of Justice, Manuel Aragão, Social Welfare, João Baptista Kussumua, among other entities, attended the meeting.
The National Disarmament Commission was created recently by the Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos.
