Namibia: Ramatex Buildings Still in Limbo

Windhoek — ALMOST two months after the abrupt closure of the Ramatex textile factory in Windhoek, authorities are yet to decide on the fate of the vacant property in Otjomuise.

Both the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Trade have referred queries on the issue to the City of Windhoek, which has not been able to provide clarity either.

"Following the recent Ramatex closure, various issues involved related to Ramatex are currently being addressed at the highest political level of our Government," the City said this week in a blanket statement to questions about Ramatex.

The City's public relations department said it was consulting with various other Government offices about the site, the building complex and environmental issues surrounding Ramatex.

"Regular inspections to the site in order to assess the existing situation are ongoing with a view to make submission for (City) Council decision on pertinent issues involved," it stated.

The municipality has promised to make public any decisions on the Ramatex issue as soon as they are taken.
