THE Ministry of Lands and Resettlement bought 17 farms during the last financial year, newly appointed Lands Minister Alpheus !Naruseb told the National Assembly on Friday.
The combined cost of the farms was N$80,9 million, he said while motivating his Ministry's budget vote.
!Naruseb told the House that land reform was not only limited to the resettlement programme but included land acquisition through the Affirmative Action Loan Scheme administered by the Agricultural Bank of Namibia.
He said waivers were issued for farms totalling 203 180 hectares offered to Government.
"Eighty-one farm offers received during the period under review were of marginal value in terms of suitability for resettlement and were thus waived," said !Naruseb.
The majority of the farms bought for resettlement were in the Karas Region, where six farms were purchased.
Three farms were bought in Otjozondjupa, two in Kunene, one in Erongo, one in Hardap, three in Oshikoto and one in the Khomas Region.
The Minister said during the last financial year, 122 families consisting of 732 people were resettled.
He said it was a fact that land redistribution and resettlement on its own would not reduce poverty and stimulate economic growth.
Resettled people required knowledge, skills and resources to use the land in a productive and sustainable way.
He said in an effort to accelerate resettlement support to the San communities, the Ministry had built 45 houses and three offices at resettlement projects at Okongo and Tsintsabis during the financial year under review.
Eight houses were built at Eendobe, 25 at Ekoka and 12 at Oshanashiwa.
He added that 20 houses and an office would be constructed at Onamatadiva.
!Naruseb said at the farm Neu Somerau, crop fields have been demarcated and allocated to 13 families so that they can start with production.

"The Ministry further intends to construct 50 houses at Neu Somerau during the 2008/2009 financial year," he said.
