Police in Monrovia Tuesday arrested 16 suspected armed robbers and drug dealers in the PHP community on South Beach, Center Street.

The Deputy spokesperson of the Liberia National Police (LNP) Lewis Norman explained that the armed robbers and drug dealers were arrested as a result of the police 'Operation Thunder Storm' which was carried out in the two communities.

He said four of the suspected armed robbers and drug dealers are women.

Col. Norman said one of the females was arrested with acid water while two of the suspects were arrested with drugs.

The police said the rest were picked up from the ghettoes in the areas where the police carried out its operation.

The Deputy police spokesman said the suspects are undergoing investigation and would later be prosecuted.

He said the government decided to launch "Operation Thunder Storm" to curtail the increase in armed robbery especially in Monrovia.

Col. Lewis said the police and its international partners would raid every community in Monrovia because armed robbers are posing serious problems to residents.

He appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing necessary information regarding the location and hideouts of armed robbers.

Recently, the Liberian police and its international partners arrested 18 armed robbers in Monrovia.

In another development, authorities of the LNP have forwarded to the Monrovia City Court Junior Sankanlay who was charged with impersonation by wearing police uniform.

According to the LNP, the culprit contravenes section 12.35 of the Liberia Penal Law and must be prosecuted.

Authorities of the LNP said during investigation, the suspect admitted to the allegation levied against him and further said he purchased the police uniform from patrolman Johnson Paye of the Marshall City Police Detachment in Margibi County for L$1,500.

Suspect Sankanlay, a police statement said, was dropped from the training program at the Police Training Academy due to his inability to cope with the basic academic training in 2007.
