Liberia: Gender Ministry Wants Alvin's 'Killer' Prosecuted

30 April 2008

Monrovia — The Ministry of Gender and Development is demanding the prosecution of the alleged killer of little Alvin Davis as interment takes place in Monrovia Thursday.

A Gender Ministry release said Alvin was allegedly murdered on December 25, 2007 by Dixon Kinimah who is said to be a juvenile and circumstances surrounding his death have not been attended to by the state.

The Ministry has expressed the need for the government to pay attention to the murder incident of Alvin because it portrays the weakness of the justice system and that if nothing is done to bring the perpetrator to justice, juveniles could be encouraged to engage in similar crime.

"The Ministry believes that the inability of relevant actors in government to uphold the rule of law and fearlessly dispense justice is a recipe for an increase in the perpetration of mob justice," the release said.

The release also added: "The Ministry further wishes to indicate that its attention has been drawn to the fact that many juveniles and minors are becoming more violent because of the impression that they can not bear criminal liability for crimes committed as juveniles."

The ministry said it finds it difficult to accept that when juveniles are accused or found guilty of heinous crimes, such as murder, rape, they go with impunity only because they are juveniles or minors.

Meanwhile, the body of Alvin Davies has been deposited at the Abraham Roberts Funeral Home.

Little Alvin is expected to be interred tomorrow following funeral rites at the First Assembly of God Church on Buchanan Street.

In a related development, the Ministry of Gender is calling on the Ministry of Justice to release the autopsy report of the late Teedecee Doe to enable the public know what led to her death and ensure justice for the family.
