Total Petroleum Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a series of activities to create public awareness about malaria prevention.
The WHO's declaration, of 2008 as the year of campaign against malaria, has, as a result, urged Total Ghana, for the first time, and as part of their corporate social responsibility, to launch these activities.
According to Mr. Felix Majekodunmi, Managing Director of Total Ghana, the WHO has estimated that malaria, which is mainly caused by mosquitoes, kills between one and two million people annually. A child also dies every thirty seconds, from the disease.
He indicated that, "It is in this view that the management and staff of Total Petroleum Ghana Limited, has embarked on a nationwide campaign through the media."

Describing the symptoms of the disease, he cited fever, headache, digestive problems, muscular pain, breathlessness, convulsion for children, and pain in the body joints, as the main symptoms.
Mr. Majekodunmi advised that, "To prevent malaria, it is important to wear long clothes, and closed shoes at nightfall, use repellent in bedrooms before sleeping, clear stagnant water close to houses, and also sleep under mosquito nets, in a good state, and insecticide treated."
In its quest to drum home the campaign, the management and staff distributed flyers, and interacted with motorists at the service stations, on how to combat the killer disease.
