Ugandan coach Benjamin Longilos has said he is counting on middle distance ace Jimmy Adar and steeplechaser Simon Ayeko to win medals at the Africa Senior Championships and qualify for the Olympics.

Uganda is represented by seven athletes but Longilos singled out the duo because of their experience and work ethic.

"What I have told them is to concentrate on running better times not positions. It's useless winning a slow and tactical race but you don't qualify," Longilos told Daily Monitor at anexciting opening ceremony at Addis Ababa stadium.

"Bayiga (Justine) can also do well because she is experienced and I hope she gets off a good start," the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) tactician noted.

Adar, Bayiga and Waisswa Lukungu (400) were due to run in the 800m heats last night and the coach cautioned them not to undermine the opposition like Africa 100m record holder Nigerian Olusoji Fasuba (9.85 seconds) who almost failed to qualify for the semifinals.

"He (Fasuba) was just running to be in the top three and was just lucky to qualify. I have told them to focus on each race as it comes."
