Somalia: PM Wants Mogadishu Mayor, National Police Chief Disarmed

Somalia's interim Prime Minister, Nur "Adde" Hassan Hussein, is reportedly backing measures to disarm some of the transitional government's most well-armed officials, regional government sources tell Garowe Online.
Mohamed "Dheere" Omar, the mayor of Mogadishu, has been informed to surrender his weapons over to the transitional government as part of a disarmament plan that began earlier this month with the confiscation of weapons belonging to former Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi. [ Full story]
The sources said Mayor Mohamed Dheere is "considering" his response to the Prime Minister's order, which reportedly gained support from Gen. Gabre, the commander of Ethiopian troops deployed in Somalia.
According to the sources, Ethiopian military commanders suspect that insurgents routinely receive weapons from Somali government and military officials, which are in turn used against Somali and Ethiopian armed forces.
Further, Prime Minister Nur Adde also wants Gen. Abdi Qeybdiid, the national police chief, and national intelligence boss Mohamed Darwish to surrender their weapons.

No word has emerged from the Qeybdiid and Darwiish camps, but locals said these men and Mayor Dheere control the most heavily-armed soldiers in Mogadishu, aside from President Abdullahi Yusuf and Gen. Gabre.
