Former Boston marathon champion, Mr Elijah Lagat, will return to the track on Saturday after clinching the Emgwen parliamentary seat.
The 2000 Boston winner will be making his debut in a world half marathon at a weekend meet in Warsaw, Poland.
Lagat will lead six other Kenyan MPs in participating in the marathon championships for world MPs.
He told The Standard on Wednesday that he had been training hard for the 21km race at the Ngong Hills and was confident he would win.
"I have been training well in Ngong and expect to run the race in a time of one hour 15 minutes, or at least under one hour 20 minutes," Lagat said.
Other Kenyan MPs in Lagat's team include Mr Danson Mungatana (Garsen), Mr Peter Munya (Tigania West) and Mr Joseph Nkaissery (Kajiado).
"The world championships will be a novel opportunity because it will give MPs across the world a chance to interact," said Lagat.
The MP said despite his weight having increased after his layoff, he still expected to perform well.
He urged other MPs to engage in athletics and other sports for the benefit of their health.
Before plunging into politics in 2002, Lagat had participated in major marathon races in several key cities, among them Frankfurt, Chicago, Berlin, Rome, and Boston.
Apart from the Boston marathon, he has also won the Berlin marathon.

The half marathon, as the name suggests, is run over 21 kilometres instead of the normal 42 kilometres.
