Kampala — RELIGIOUS beliefs should not be considered when determining the number of children a person should have, Asuman Kyafu, the chairman of Iganga district, has advised.
Kyafu advised parents, especially Muslims, to produce the number of children they can take good care of.
"I am a Muslim, but I do not have the recommended four wives. I have also planned my family well and have only two children," he said.
Kyafu was recently speaking during a visit of the USAID deputy country director, Deborah Griesser. Griesser paid a courtesy call on Kyafu at his office in Iganga town.
He said having many children had become a burden for most parents. Kyafu said having big families was one of the causes of poverty in Busoga region.
Griesser assured Kyafu that they would boost family planning services in Busoga through AFFORD, a five-year programme of USAID. "We plan to bring family planning services to Iganga because the district has one of the highest fertility rates in Uganda," she said.
