JUSTINE Bayiga and Waisswa Lukungu powered their way into the semifinals of the 400m at the Africa Athletics Championships yesterday.

But Emily Nanziri was not that lucky, developing a stitch at the 200m bend and finishing fifth in the 400m event held after a heavy downpour, the first in ten months in the city.

After a hot and humid morning, the weather changed abruptly, forcing the organisers to delay the 400m heats.

While Bayiga surged ahead in the last 150m, Lukungu had to wait for the last heat before he knew that his time of 48.78s was the best among the losers to advance to the semifinals.

Relatedly, Uganda's only Olympic gold medallist John Aki-Bua and Commonwealth 3000m steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru are among 75 athletes who have been put into the Africa Athletics Confederation Hall of Fame.

The two were honoured by world athletics governing body IAAF and AAC for their victories, that put Africa in the limelight.
