Congolese security officers have agreed to crackdown on gangs that steal Ugandan cars and sell them in the DR Congo.

In a meeting at Hotel Cafeteria in Rubiriha, eastern DR Congo recently, officials from the two countries agreed to carry out joint operations.

The Ugandan team was headed by Maj. Herbert Makanga of the 21 Battalion, while Maj. Gavias Kambale of the 42 Battallion in Beni, led the Congolese side.

Makanga said several Ugandans had lost their cars and motorcycles, which were sold in Congo.

He added that the UPDF would also hunt for Ugandans with stolen Congolese cars.

At the meeting, Kambale handed over a vehicle registration number UAG 347D, which was recovered from Goma.

The owner, Kise Mulindwa, a Masaka-based businessman, said the car was stolen three years ago and he had lost hope of retrieving it.

Regional army spokesman Capt. Kiconco Tabaro said the operation meant the two countries would share intelligence information.
