Six out of the 30 Egyptian medical doctors who were recruited by the Taraba State government last year to manage the new state Specialist Hospital in Jalingo, have been granted registration permit by the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, Daily Trust checks have shown.

The expatriate doctors were earlier barred by the Medical Council from practicing in the country, insisting that they must undergo and pass a mandatory examination to be conducted by it before being given a clean bill of health to practice in Nigeria.

Daily Trust findings show that the successful six were given licenses to practice in the country having passed the mandatory pre-registration examination prescribed for them as a condition for their registration by the medical council. Three others were said to have failed the examination.

Our findings further shows that five out of the doctors had earlier absconded from the pre examination refresher course in Benin, Edo State, allegedly because they couldn't communicate in English, while 17 others were said to have gone back to their country of origin[Egypt] out of what a source described as 'frustration'.

The six successful doctors who have since gone back to Jalingo to commence work at the State Specialist Hospital, were said to have been presented with their licences after undergoing a two month induction in Abuja.

The Special Adviser to the State Governor on Healthcare Delivery Matters, Dr. Alfred Kobiba, confirmed to Daily Trust that only six of the Egyptian doctors have been granted licences to practice in the state, adding that three others failed the test and will not be allowed to practice in the state.
