More than 68,538 children have been immunised against polio in Bwari Area Council under the current phase of the National Programme on Immunisation (NPI).
Malam Badamasi Muhammad, the NPI Local Immunisation Officer, disclosed yesterday in Bwari.
He said that the council, in conjunction with UNICEF, had commenced the payment of allowances to the personal involved in the programme.
Muhammad, who doubled as the Programme Manager, said that 330 ad hoc staff was engaged for the two-week immunisation exercise.
"Three categories of staff, which include supervisors, health workers and others, are being paid in two batches," he said.
He said that the supervisors were being paid N7,200, while the health workers would receive N4,900.
"Other officials will be getting N2,100 from UNICEF and N1,500 from Bwari Area Council each, and they will all be paid from today, " he said.
Muhammad commended members of the public for their cooperation during the exercise and urged them to report fresh cases of polio to appropriate authorities.
He, however, advised pregnant women to always attend clinics for regular pre-natal immunisation against polio.
Some of the workers who handled the immunisation project expressed happiness over the payment of their allowances, two days after the exercise.
"I am happy that we finished our work on Sunday and I am here to collect my allowances; I really thank the organisers," Rosemary Kawu said.
"I am happy, at least I can buy something good for myself and I will also buy something for my parents," Ali Sani said.
