Deaths caused by malaria in Singida district have decreased significantly, the District Council's malaria control coordinator has said.

The coordinator said the deaths went down by 40 per cent from 98 people in 2006 to 54 in 2007.

He attributed the decrease to awareness campaigns that have seen more people adopting preventative measures than previously.

The campaigns also sensitised infected villagers to seek medical care. Previously, most people shunned hospitals.

However, the number of infected people increased from 96,000 to over 200,000 during the same period, resulting in the district spending Sh1.7 billion in treating patients.

Meanwhile, two unidentified people died in an explosion after a diesel tanker they were travelling in overturned into a river before bursting into flames.

The driver of the tanker (T521ADD), which belongs to Hillari Sudi of Singida, lost control after hitting a broken down lorry belonging to Kinampanda College.

Regional police commander Celina Kalebu said the incident occurred yesterday morning at the Msisi Village in Singida district.

One passenger was also seriously injured in the accident. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the regional hospital mortuary.
