Angola: Elections Chief Assures Permanent Relation With Journalists

Angola National Electoral Commission (CNE) chairman, Caetano de Sousa, guaranteed on Wednesday, here, that this organ will always be in permanent contact with journalists to give them appropriate information and in real time regarding the preparation of the forthcoming elections.

Caetano de Sousa who expressed this accessibility at the end of the seminar under the motto "Mass Media and the elections in Angola", recognised that journalists play a key role in the coverage of elections, and the duty of passing the facts with objectivity.

"We, CNE, know and are attentive to the dominant responsibility of the journalists (who will cover the electoral campaign as citizens and professionals", Caetano de Sousa, added stressing the need to inform with fairness so that the elections be free, fair and transparent.

According to Mr de Sousa journalists are for excellence self-taught persons and their profession demands engagement and personal dedication, besides involving the individual searching for knowledge and the domain of certain materials.

Caetano de Sousa reminded that the country holds this year the second legislative elections (after the 1992 polls), advancing that each citizen, political party and the society in general knows the instruction and the models on the preparation of the elections until the final date.

During the training action were discussed themes such as "The press role in the consolidation of democracy", "The Mass Media in the electoral legislation", "Strategies of electoral coverage in radio, television and newspapers" and "The Portuguese, Brazilian and South African experience in electoral coverage".

At the agenda were also included "The importance of the media in the civic electoral education", "Journalistic objectivity in the electoral coverage", "American Electoral System" and the "Electoral Coverage in Angola - 1992 experience".

The seminar gathered various Mass Media professionals from public and private organs and counted on national and foreign lecturers.
