Buea — Hon. PC Fonso, Member of Parliament, MP, for Mbengwi Central, has dissociated himself from the events that led to the detention of 23 SDF militants in Kondengui prison.

Briefing the press in Bamenda on Friday April 25, Fonso attributed his low score in the July 2007 polls to the manipulations of the Mbengwi Central administration and APF Chairman, Barrister Ben Muna, who put up notices all over Mbengwi accusing him of embezzling FCFA 50 million.

Concerning the detained SDF militants, the Mbengwi MP denied accusations, still by Muna, that he arranged for seven vanguards to travel to Yaounde and disrupt the Muna-Ngwasiriri Convention on May 26, 2006, which action led to the death of Gregoire Diboule. Hon. Fonso said he only learnt of it during the Bamenda convention that held on the same day.

He lamented the fact that as a result of the detention, John Nguh, one of the vanguards from Njindom, Mbengwi Central, died. He regretted the continuous detention of the remaining SDF detainees under appalling conditions.

However, he expressed concern over their deteriorating health but said he was happy that Meta people had since done their investigations and now know he had no hand in the matter. He appealed to the Biya regime to release the detained SDF militants.

Hon Fonso also denied ever campaigning to be SDF Parliamentary group leader, saying he (Fonso), as the treasury for the Group, has a good working relationship with Joseph Banadzem, the current leader. He claimed he had used his parliamentary grant to the satisfaction of his constituents.

Achievements outside Mbengwi, he said, include his appointment by the Commonwealth Secretary General to monitor of elections in Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.
