MERCY MISSION, a Christian Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has held a one-day workshop, for community and opinion leaders, and sensitized them on the dangers of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS disease, at Konongo-Odumasi over the weekend.

Mr. Augustine Bakono, a resource person and official of the Disease Control Unit of the Ministry of Health, stressed that the TB disease, which is contagious and on the ascendancy, now has a cure, and that treatment is also free at the various health facilities of the country.

He advised community and opinion leaders, attending the workshop, to create awareness about the TB disease in their communities.

He further stressed that prolonged cough cases, must be reported early, to the nearest health facility, in order to avoid complications.

Mrs. Theresa Acheampong, a Midwife and HIV/AIDS Counselor at the Konongo-Odumasi Government Hospital, speaking to participants about the HIV/AIDS disease, explained that TB and HIV/AIDS were partners, that they go together, but the good news was that there was a cure for TB, provided patients seek early treatment, and adhere to medical advice, by eating a balanced diet, and taking their medications seriously.

She further stated that compassion must be shown to people living with HIV/AIDS, and Tuberculosis, to help prolong their lives, because stigmatisation drives victims to an early grave.

Mrs. Acheampong also advised participants at the workshop, to educate chop bar and drinking bar keepers, to keep their business environment clean, by always washing drinking cups and bowls with warm soapy water.

Madam Comfort Sey, Executive Director of Mercy Mission, also appealed to participants to take workshop lessons seriously, and work in practical terms, to help reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS and TB in the communities.
