Kenya: Police Chiefs Meet to Prepare Ground for Return of Refugees

2 May 2008

Nairobi — Police commissioner Hussein Ali on Thursday met top security officials in what was seen as preparing the ground for the resettlement of internal refugees.

The meeting brought together all provincial police officers and senior members of the General Service Unit and Administration Police.

Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe confirmed to the Nation that a meeting took place but denied that the resettlement of the refugees was discussed.

But other sources indicated that the resettlement might start early next week after security officers have assessed the situation in affected areas.

The refugees living in several camps and police stations across the country were displaced in the January violence. The security move follows a tour of affected regions by President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to preach peace and reconciliation.

Meanwhile, an internal refugee displaced from Kuresoi committed suicide in Molo over what relatives said was because of frustrations.

The body of Mr Newton Mungai, 50, was found dangling from a tree at Chepkinoiyo Farm. He was uprooted from his home during last year's post-election violence in the area.

His neighbour, Mrs Grace Rono, said Mr Mungai came to visit his abandoned home and found that it had been torched by arsonists.

A local chief, Mr Simon Cheluget, notified the police and Mr Mungai's body was taken to Molo District Hospital mortuary.

At the same time, a Danish refugee council organisation assisting in the resettlement of internal refugees has called on residents in clashes-torn areas of Molo District to embrace dialogue in a bid to restore peace.

A regional manager, Mr Simon Nzioka, said their organisation would provide psycho social support to the refugees to enable them cope with the trauma associated with the recent violence.
