Two mutilated and decomposing bodies of young men believed to be members of the outlawed Mungiki sect were found on Thursday at the Machakos District Hospital mortuary.

Relatives who identified the bodies said the young men were last seen in Nairobi's Kang'ethe matatu stage in Westlands, where they worked as touts, on February 11.

They were identified as Mr Joseph Kariuki and Mr Eliud Gatundu.

And, Mungiki spokesman Njuguna Gitau Njuguna confirmed that the young men were members of the group. He said they were conductors along the Westlands-Kinoo route and went missing between January and March.

He called for the resignation of the Police boss, Hussein Ali to pave way for fresh investigations since the police have failed to arrest the killers.

Mr George Kamatu, an uncle of Mr Kariuki, broke down in tears after seeing the bodies. "Can someone please tell President Kibaki to talk to people in Central Province and help end this madness?"

Unknown persons

Friends and relatives cannot understand how their bodies found their way to the Machakos hospital.

According to a mortuary attendant, the two bodies which were entered in as unknown persons were brought in by police in February.

A father of one of the dead, Mr Hezekiah Maina Mucheru, said police called to tell him about the discovery of his last born's remains at the mortuary.

Another relative, Mr Reuben Ngugi, said they had visited all hospitals and mortuaries since they disappeared.

Young men

"What we know is that on the day they disappeared, they were seen boarding a lorry. One of them even called a friend to tell him that the fellows who had taken them were demanding Sh100,000," recalled Mr Ngugi.

Late last year, the bodies of five young men were found at the Stoni Athi shooting range in Athi River after they were allegedly abducted in Nairobi. All had bullet wounds and appeared to have been killed elsewhere and dumped there.

But, Mungiki spokesman said the sect members will remain peaceful until the talks are successfully completed.
