Angola: International Workers' Day Act Marked With March

2 May 2008

Luanda — At least 5,000 workers from various fields participated Thursday in a march in commemoration of the International Workers' Day (May 01), which culminated in the reading of an Intentions Declaration, in the capital city's Independence Square, ANGOP witnessed.

The representative of the state-run cleaning company Elisal, Tomas Baptista, said to ANGOP that the current moment serves for a refection as "we must think on where we come from, where we are at, and move towards economic stability and national reconstruction".

In his opinion, this date serves to unite Angolan people, and shows the contribute of workers and the Angolan government to the improvement of salary and labour conditions, which enable the country's development.

He explained that there is still lack of the necessary conditions to adequately compensate the workers for their effort or sacrifice, but he believes that better days will come, under the guidance of a modern trade-unionism.

On his turn, the secretary for organisation of Luanda's Joint Trade-Unions, Viriato Bumba, said May 01 should represent to workers a moment of manifestation for the improvement of salary conditions, a plea that started in Chicago (U.S.A), in 1886.

Under the commemorations, the chairperson of the National Trade-Union of Non-University Teachers and Workers, said the date is being marked with discontent demonstrations all over the world, as workers have so far not been properly rewarded for their efforts
