Mara Anglican diocese Bishop Hilkiah Omindo Deya yesterday warned the Government over the looming environmental degradation from gold mine pits at Buhema gold mine.

The cleric has thus called on the Government to fill in the pits which also endanger lives of residents in the area.

The Government has since suspended mining in the area located a few miles from Butiama village.

"They have harvested a lot of gold at the mine but left Buhemba villagers with huge holes," lamented the bishop.

This has frustrated on- going efforts by the Anglican church in Mara diocese to conserve the environment in villages surrounding the mine.

The bishop was speaking to journalists shortly after the latter had visiting the mine.

Bishop Omindo wondered why the mine was allowed to operate without allocation of funds for environment protection.

He also lamented that the mine did not support social services in the surrounding communities.

The closure of the mine has rendered hundreds of people jobless that has led to increased crime in the area.

The mine was jointly operated by the Government and a South African mining company.

Ms Agnes Amos, a resident in the area said people have been left without access to clean water, schools or health facilities.

They also complained of poor roads that are rendered impassable during the rain season.
