THE dead fin whale that washed ashore at Jakkalsputz last weekend is becoming a smelly affair, according to Namibia Wildlife Resorts' Erongo Manager, Francois Snyders.

The six-metre-long animal is apparently too large for the high tide to draw back into the ocean, and the usual beach cleaners - seagulls and jackals - are struggling to consume the hulk of meat quickly enough.

"Something should have been done about this a long time ago.

Moving the whale along with a bulldozer then would have been easier than now.

Now it's rotting to pieces, which will make cleaning up an even more messy affair - and even more stinky," Snyders told The Namibian.

Sources in coastal conservation say nothing should be done, and that nature should be allowed to take its course.

They say there aren't that many people camping at Jakkalsputz at the moment who would be inconvenienced by the rotting whale.

"If the whale had washed up within a built-up area then one could have looked into measures for removing it, but it seems unnecessary to do so now," the source said.

Snyders said NWR would not have a problem with letting nature take its course, but not in a tourist resort.

He said if the State-owned company had the equipment it would have disposed of the carcass, but it would be much easier for the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to bury it, as had been done in the past.

He said NWR was in talks with the Ministries of Environment and Fisheries to find a solution.
