A 28-year-old man on Wednesday narrowly escaped death and sustained serious injuries after he jumped out of a minibus he was travelling in to view three cars that had crashed along the Okahandja-Otjiwarongo Road.
Chief Inspector Andreas Nelumbu from the Otjiwarongo Police yesterday confirmed to New Era that at about 23h00 a Volkswagen, registration N11698S travelling from the direction of Okahandja, caught fire while in motion 65 kilometers away from Otjiwarongo at a place called Sukses.
The driver of the vehicle abruptly stopped in the middle of the road causing a Toyota Corolla CA73572 that was behind to crash into the stationary vehicle.
According to Nelumbu, the impact pushed the burning car onto the opposite lane.
Unfortunately, the driver of another vehicle coming from Otjiwarongo, a Volkswagen Citi Golf N4986RU applied brakes too late and rammed into the others.
The burning Volkswagen had three passengers including the driver.
The two passengers aged 19 and four sustained back and chest injuries and were transferred to Windhoek for treatment.
The Toyota Corolla had five passengers including the driver while the Volkswagen Citi Golf had three.
They all sustained minor injuries and were admitted at Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
Yesterday Nelumbu confirmed that the nine were released yesterday morning after medical observation.
He said a minibus that was headed for Windhoek also stopped at the scene and a curious 28-year-old man jumped out of the minibus to establish what had happened.
It remains unknown what hit him as both his legs were seriously injured and he sustained other multiple injuries.

"Police are still investigating the incident because all this happened before they arrived at the scene," Nelumbu said.
