Some journalists of public media organs considered Thursday, in Luanda, that since the implantation of democracy in the country, freedom of press registers acceptable levels of growth.

Speaking to ANGOP, in the ambit of the Freedom of Press International Day, to be celebrated on May 3, the journalists said that freedom of press is very important for the country's development process, democracy and economy.

"Nowadays, some freedom can already be noticed. But we are absolutely sure that with the steps Angola is taking towards the achievement of democracy, in a few years time, after the coming elections Angola will attain the real freedom of opinion and thought" he said.

The journalists were unanimous in saying that with the exercise of an investigative and pluralist journalism, it will be tackled a lot of issues worrying the populations and found solutions to their benefit.

The journalist of the Angolan public television (TPA), Zacarias Bungo, underlined that nowadays people can be more objective in assessing the situation of press freedom, based on pluralism and the existence of various social communication organs, though it is not in the desired numbers yet.

Joaquim Artur of TPA, said that freedom of press exists, and it is present in our professional daily life, and it also exists in the private newspapers that write and publish every kind of information.

According to him, there has been a big evolution in the Angolan journalism allowing that channels of talks how are kept open.

Armindo Ngola, also from the public television, thinks that this celebration is debatable, highlighting that despite all, more openness should exist in the area of information.

On the other hand, Lígia Fortes, from the Angolan National Radio (RNA), said that there is freedom of press, because wide variety of information can be obtained.

Freedom of Press World Day has been established by the United Nations 15 years ago and celebrated in every state of the world.
