EDUCATION is the key to success, so goes a saying that has been used over and over again.

And if this saying symbolises the importance of education to mankind, then all efforts aimed at improving this sector should be welcomed and supported.

The injection of US$17 million into infrastructure development at Mulungushi University in Kabwe by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is a welcome gesture.

Mulungushi was turned into a university only recently from a college and the need and desire for infrastructure development cannot be over-emphasised.

A university goes with certain infrastructure that is beyond those of a secondary school or college.

Students' hostels and other facilities of a university should reach certain standards that will make the learning environment conducive to the students.

A university is the highest learning institution where those who will run the social and economic development of the country are churned out.

For Zambia to have graduates that will contribute positively to the growth of the economy, there is need to create a conducive learning atmosphere for them.

And it is good that the gesture has come from the private sector - a positive sign that the mine attaches great importance to education and realises that Government alone cannot afford to meet such costs.

This is what ploughing back into the community entails, where there are direct interventions into issues affecting the community.

Learning or education is one issue that no doubt affects the community and should not be left to Government alone to deal with.

Partnerships with Government or sole interventions by industry are what can help the situation.

A word of advice to KCM is that this should not be the end but the beginning of more such assistance.

It should also be an eye opener to other business houses to rise to the challenge and jump on the bandwagon.

They should plough back into the community by helping out in such situations like the manner in which KCM has come out to assist Mulungushi University.
