Delta

Recent statistics have shown that the HIV and AIDS prevalence in Delta State is on a steady decline. Available records from the State Action Committee on HIV and AIDS (SACA) and the Ministry of Health have shown areasonable percentage reduction between the 2003 and the 2005 Sentinel Survey reports.

The records, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba, showed that Delta had a prevalence rate of 4.2 per cent in 1999, which increased to 5.8 per cent in 2001, the highest ever.

The 2003 Sentinel Report, however, showed a reduction by 0.8 per cent, as it dropped to 5.0 per cent, which was attributed to involvement of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in enlightenment programmes and impact of the action committee further reduced the rate to 3.7 per cent.

The NGOs are optimistic that the 2007 yet to be released Sentinel Survey report, will further show a reduction.Mr Wisdom Osakwe, President, Champions Health Club, an NGO organising youths and creating awareness in schools, said NGOs were happy with results of their activities in various communities.

"We have been spreading the message, telling people to live positive lives. In various schools in the state, we are telling the youth to spread the message and not the virus," he said.Osakwe, a UNICEF-trained peer educator, said his group had been able to inculcate in the youth the fact that they had a future.

Also speaking, SACA Community Mobilisation Officer, Mrs Grace Sifo, commended all the stakeholders in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
