Oliver Mtukudzi's performance at the Gaborone Autumn Jazz Festival in the Botswana capital came to a chaotic end on Saturday when riot police stepped in to close the show as the veteran artiste was just getting started.

It turned out that the organiser, John Selolwane, who is also a Batswana musician, failed to abide by the new Botswana liquor regulations which state that such shows end at midnight.

The festival in question was scheduled to go well into the early hours of Sunday and that is why Tuku took to the stage around midnight for a forgettable performance. Also caught on the wrong side of the law were South African-based Tshepo Tshola, Shanti Lo and Lister Boleseng.

Selolwane claimed that he had documents from the Ministry of Trade and Industry authorising him to operate beyond the revised hours.

Luckily for the organisers, the fans left the venue without any incidents of violence.
