Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda would be the guest of honour in this year's edition of Taifa Cup opener between Iringa and Manyara regions to be staged at the National Stadium tomorrow.
Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) official Fimbo Butallah said the premier has already confirmed his intention to attend.
Butallah said he expects a highly competitive tournament, on account of the thoroughness with which the various teams were making their preparations. The Iringa regional team arrived in Dar es Salaam yesterday while the Kagera team is expected today.
Meanwhile, the Temeke Combine team today play Dodoma's Mazengo Warriors at the Jamhuri Stadium to gear up for the championship.
Temeke District Football Association (TEFA) chairman Peter Mhinzi said his team expects to play the Coast Region side on Wednesday before making its debut in the tourney.
The winner of the revived championship would scoop a Sh30 million cash prize, with 23 regions taking part in the event. Ends
Basketball prodigy declines NBA offer By Suleiman Jongo US-based Tanzanian basketball prodigy Hasheem Thabeet has opted to continue with college studies instead of featuring for this season's highly lucrative NBA league.
Basketball Federation of Tanzania (BFT) official Laurent Cheyo said at the weekend that the towering Thabeet is among a few players from East Africa who won the NBA nomination to feature in the league.
The former Makongo High School student, Thabeet is among players approached by NBA agents to solicit his acceptance to feature in the league.
Cheyo said Thabeet was at a crossroads as to whether he should quit his three year scholarship at Connecticut University to make his appearance in the NBA league.
Thabeet was spotted by basketball talent scouting agents during last year's Kili RBA league sanctioned by Basketball Dar es Salaam.
Meanwhile, the Mainland trio of Army Basketball Club (ABC), Savio, Arusha Kings and Dodoma Spurs are expected to compete in this year's edition of the Union league set for May 17 through 23 in Zanzibar.
Cheyo said the teams have been training for the tourney, while the organisers have completed preparations for the event. However, the Isles body hasn't named their representatives in the league so as to draw a fixture.
The Isles' league is still in progress, officials said. The league would also involve women teams in the likes of Jeshi Stars, Lady Lions, Police Dar es Salaam and Cargo Ladies. The league is alternately staged in the Mainland and in Zanzibar through BFT and the Isles' basketball body, BAZA.
