The Uganda Medical Workers Union has reminded the government that the 2-month ultimatum they gave before staging a strike is about to expire. The health workers say the government has failed to implement its pledge to improve health workers' remuneration.

Dr Sam Lyomoki, the Workers' MP, told health workers at Mulago Hospital on Friday that if by the end of this month nothing is done, the government should expect a strike by the workers.

He said last year the government promised risk, transport and overtime allowance for the medical workers but nothing has been implemented. "The ministries of Health and Public Service confirmed that our concerns were being handled, the cabinet also approved Shs30 billion but we wonder where the funds have vanished to," Dr Lyomoki said.

The Director of Health Services, Dr Sam Zaramba, said his ministry was handling the union's concerns.

"The issue of the Shs30 billion was a proposal by the Ministry of Public Service but we have not received the money," Dr Zaramba said.

The health system in the country is sliding more into a crisis characterised by reduction in budgetary support.
