Ndola

Once again the ugly face of crime has resurfaced, this time taking away dear lives of two security guards who were on duty when they were attacked and killed in Lusaka.

One was shot dead by men armed with an AK 47 assault rifle, while heartless people whose behaviour can only be matched to that of wild animals, stoned the other to death. These barbaric acts cannot and should not be allowed in our society. While the police have so far done a good job under the leadership of Ephraim Mateyo, much more needs to be done in terms of intensifying patrols, collaborating with members of the public and any other means that can help to mitigate or reduce crime.

Reports of violent crime have of late been reported from other parts of Zambia including Livingstone, the tourist capital, where a number of tourists have been victims of mugging. Most criminal acts are done in gangster style like the ones we see in movies. The police are doing a commendable job especially where investigations of such cases are concerned. But what is needed is to stitch in time to save nine, that is to say prevention is better than cure. This is where the public comes in because all the perpetrators of crime are living within the communities. And if this is so, then members of the public, including relatives of the criminals, are aware of the bad eggs in their midst.

No one should feel pity and hesitate to report suspicious characters in communities just because one is related to that particular suspicious looking person. It is easy to suspect someone by judgement especially where one is not in any formal or informal employment but is almost always found spending lavishly - living well beyond his or her means. The public has an obligation to report such person or persons to the nearest police post or station. So members of the public, let us all wake up and help in the fight against violent crime so that we can all live in a better environment free of crime and help in saving innocent lives.

The police should also play their part by intensifying patrols especially in current times when there is a lot of load-shedding on power. They should also engage members of the public in identifying bad elements in society.
