OVER 1, 000 motor vehicles have been impounded in Lusaka after being found with fake number plates.

Communication and Transport Deputy Minister, Mubika Mubika, confirmed the development in Lusaka yesterday. He said the exercise was courtesy of the Road Safety and Transport Agency (RSTA) in conjunction with State police.

Mr Mubika, in an interview, said during the operations which had continued in different points, it was discovered that motor vehicles did not have genuine number plates. Mr Mubika said the operatives were confiscating fake number plates to bar culprits from using the same. He said it was sad that people decided to get number plates from the streets instead of authorised Government wings, adding that the State would not allow such a trend to continue and that those found wanting should not blame law enforcement officers.

He said officers would continue with the exercise of impounding vehicles found with fake number plates while the exercise would be extended to other provinces. He explained that only four companies had been engaged to issue number plates, but wondered why some people continued to ignore the registered companies and preferred to get number plates from streets.

"I can confirm that over 1,000 vehicles have been impounded in the last few weeks in Lusaka after it was discovered that most of them had fake number plates which were issued by unregistered dealers.

"But the trend will not be allowed to continue because officers have continued to monitor the situation," he said. Some affected motorists talked to wondered why it had taken the Government such a long time to arrest the situation considering some of them had been using the cars for several months.
