Criminals in the early hours of yesterday in Lusaka killed two security guards in separate incidents, while a man of Chilenje Township poured petrol on his wife and set her ablaze before she died.
In Kabwata, a group of bandits, armed with stones and iron bars, attacked two security guards manning Kabwata Basic school and brutally stoned one to death, while the other guard had both of his legs broken.
Eyewitnesses and Police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso, said the body of the victim was discovered by people, who use one of the classrooms for their church service, yesterday morning. The witnesses said they later found another guard who was gasping for breath behind another classroom block and that it appeared he had crawled because both of his legs were broken.
Mr Kapeso identified the deceased as Rodgers Mwiluzi of Misisi Township and that the incident happened around 01:00 hours and a manhunt had already been launched to bring the culprits to book. The condition of the injured was described as critical. A check at the school found that the criminals had broken the window to the headmaster's office, but police at the scene could not confirm if there were any items stolen. A trail of blood was found from where the surviving guard was stabbed and stoned to where he crawled behind the block. A Good Samaritan later rushed the injured guard to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) where he was admitted while the body of the dead man, which was beyond recognition, was taken to the UTH mortuary.
In another incident in Kamwala South, armed criminals shot dead a security man who was guarding an uncompleted house while two of his colleagues managed to run away. Mr Kapeso said the victim whose identity had been withheld until his next of kin were informed, died instantly from bullets fired from an AK 47 rifle. In the Chilenje incident, Robert Makwamazi, aged 55, poured petrol on his 51-year-old wife, Patricia, before setting her ablaze in unexplained circumstances around 04:00hours.
Mr Kapeso said in the process of setting his wife ablaze, the man was also burnt and was nursing wounds at UTH's ward G21. Police have since launched investigations to establish what led to such an action and appealed to couples to find amicable ways of addressing their differences instead of taking the law into their own hands.
And those close to the deceased expressed shock on the death of Mrs Makwamazi who on Saturday spent much of her time at a nearby church and described her as a committed member who was interested in serving God. Meanwhile, a man aged between 30 and 35 died after the house he was sleeping in caught fire in unexplained circumstances in the early hours of yesterday in Lusaka's John Laing Township. Police were still trying to establish what caused the fire. By the time the Fire Brigade arrived at the scene, the house was almost collapsing. In another related development, police have arrested a 19-year-old man who allegedly defiled a 14-year-old girl in Lusaka's Ngwerere Township.
In Kitwe, police have arrested a couple for allegedly dumping a one-year-three-months-old baby at their neighbour's gate. Police confirmed the arrest of the couple in an interview yesterday and identified the suspects as Josephine Katonya and Paul Mikendo of Chambishi.
The incident happened on Saturday between 23:00 hours and midnight. Neighbours of the couple were awaked by the crying baby later in the night and when they went to check on what was happening, they found the baby on the ground.

Police said when the neighbours looked at the baby closely, they discovered it belonged to the couple.
